There is a spirit of perversion that is sweeping across our nation. It’s characterized by twisted versions of the truth, an obsession with sex and violence, and a complete disregard for Godly principles.
The spirit of perversion is often misunderstood. Many people think it only refers to sexual perversion, but this is not the case. This unclean spirit influences people to do whatever they want and then twist the truth to justify their actions.
This spirit is seducing our young people and leading them into a lifestyle of destruction. It has a very seductive nature and is often very appealing, especially to young people.
Sadly, this spirit is also invading the Church – more and more each day.
So, what do we do? Keep reading to learn more about the characteristics of the spirit of perversion, what the Bible says, and how to break free from its circle of enticement, torment, and guilt.
What is a Spirit of Perversion?
The spirit of perversion is a demonic entity that craves perverted activities and perverted thoughts. These evil spirits use humans to carry out their will here on earth since they don’t have bodies of their own to accomplish the ultimate evil agenda.
Before we dig into the personality and characteristics of the spirit of perversion, let’s look at the definition of perversion.
The Definition of Perversion
The dictionary describes perversion as contrary (implying a temperamental unwillingness to accept orders or advice), perverse, restive, balky, or a wayward mean inclined to resist authority or control.
Synonyms of perversion include choleric, crabby, cranky, cross, crotchety, fiery, grouchy, grumpy, irascible, irritable, peevish, pettish, petulant, prickly, quick-tempered, raspy, ratty, short-tempered, snappish, snappy, snarky, snippety, snippy, stuffy, testy, waspish.
Boy, if that doesn’t describe the attitudes within America today, I don’t know what does!
The “Gang Members” in Operation with the Spirit of Perversion
Unclean spirits run in demon groupings and work together to bring down humanity. Once a door is opened within a human soul, these tormenters let other demons in to help. The spirit of perversion runs in a gang with the following sexual impurity spirits:
- Whoredom/Harlotry.
- Lust.
- Seduction.
- Masturbation.
- Fantasy Lust.
- Homosexuality.
- Adultery.
- Incest.
In addition to these, other evil spirits that you often see manifest in and through a person operating with a spirit of perversion are:
- Rebellion.
- Murder.
- Witchcraft.
- Idolatry.
- Lying.
This isn’t an exhaustive list and can vary from person to person, but it gives you a good idea of what to watch for.
How Does the Spirit of Perversion Manifest in our Society?
Sadly, the spirit of perversion is very evident in our society today. I believe it’s the consequence of slowly removing God and Godly morals from the world. It continues to spread and grow like a virus.
Some ways that the spirit of perversion shows up in the world are:
- A complete disregard for God and His principles.
- An increasing acceptance of sexual immorality and perverted sexual practices.
- A growing fascination with violence, gore, and death.
- An obsession with power, control, and domination.
- A general attitude of rebellion and defiance towards authority.
- A trend towards lawlessness and anarchy.
- A growing interest in the occult and things that are dark and evil.
- The objectification of women as sexual objects.
- The acceptance of sexual promiscuity and pornography.
- A normalization of killing innocent unborn babies through abortion.
If you look close enough, you’ll discover that the entertainment industry has an enormous influence on all of these.
As Christians following Jesus, we must be mindful of these things and stay on guard against them. We also need to pray for our children and grandchildren – the future generations.
Opening The Door to The Spirit of Perversion
The mind is the primary battleground of all demons. A person begins to entertain perverse thoughts and then perverse imaginations. From there, they start to act on those perverted thoughts and imaginations through perverse words and deeds.
But how does this demonic spirit get his foot in the door of your mind in the first place? It starts with a tiny seed that’s then watered and groomed by the appointed evil spirit gang over time.
The devil and his unclean minions practice moving slow and increasing their ground with subtle movements so that the person doesn’t notice, much like the frog in water metaphor.
Before long, the door is wide open for the spirit of perversion to come in and take over. The unclean spirits use other people to set up situations to entice and influence more perverted actions and thoughts, digging deeper and deeper into the soul of their victims.
This is why it’s so important to guard our minds against perverse thoughts. We can do this through the power of God’s Word! When we meditate on Scripture and let it fill our minds, we are less likely to entertain perverse thoughts.
Here are some ways that the spirits of perversion use to plant those tiny ungodly seeds in your mind:
Distractions and Lack of Intimacy with God
Distractions and worldly things can steal your attention, heart, and mind away from the things of God if you’re not diligent and self-disciplined. Watch yourself so you don’t get out of balance in anything.
“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12.
Some examples of distractions devised to plant perverted seeds in the mind are:
- Playing video games that contain sexual or violent content for hours on end. Even perverted speech in these games will plant a seed in your mind.
- Watching movies containing nudity, sex scenes, or murder scenes – you know the “shock factor” that movie producers are aiming for more and more.
- Listening to music (and singing it) containing lyrics that talk about sexual acts or lust. The world thinks this stuff is normal; they’ve become desensitized to it. It’s an easy “in and win” for demons.
- Social media addictions. Some people spend all of their free time on social media instead of with the things of God. Let’s be honest; social media contains many perverted things that we see with our eyes too.
Matthew 6:22-24 says, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Lack Of Intimacy in Marriage
Another way that a perverted spirit can worm its way in is when married couples deny each other intimacy – sexual or emotional.
The Bible warns about a lack of intimacy in marriage in 1 Corinthians 7:5:
“Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”
With access to the internet in everyone’s hands, the enemy has made it easy for someone to be tempted into sin against their spouse and their own body if they are not careful. When we deprive our spouse of intimacy, we open the door for the spirit of perversion to have a foothold.
Some examples of this are:
- Viewing pornography or scantily clothed bodies.
- Flirting with people online (emotionally or sexually).
- Sexting people that are not your spouse.
- Chatting online and having an emotional affair.
If you are not having regular intimacy with your spouse, ask God to help you overcome whatever is hindering that. Whether it’s an addiction, unforgiveness, lack of communication, or something else, He will give you the strength to overcome it if you ask Him. He is the God of reconciliation.
A Lack of Purity in Speech
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21.
Proverbs in the Bible tells us that the tongue has the power of life and death. So many people today are addicted to using profanity as part of their regular vocabulary without realizing that it’s affecting their souls and framing their lives. They think, “What’s the big deal? They are only words.”
The familiar nursery rhyme phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me,” is a colossal lie.
Your words are powerful, and demons know it, whether the person using perverse speech does or not. In fact, words can even cause a curse to come on a person.
One of the characteristics of the spirit of perversion is causing a person to use their tongue for evil instead of good. It can even do so compulsively.
What Does the Bible Say About Perverted and Filthy Speech?
God’s word has quite a lot to say about filthy speech. Here are just a few scriptures.
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” Luke 6:45.
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29.
“But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
These are what defile a person…” Matthew 15:18-20.
“But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.” Colossians 3:8.
Some examples of perverted speech include:
- Cussing (swear words).
- Taking the Lord’s name in vain.
- Talking “dirty” in a sexual manner.
- Saying things that tear people down instead of building them up.
Dysfunctional Childhood Upbringing
It’s easy to succumb to satanic powers if you don’t have a biblical blueprint to follow. Children that grow up in dysfunctional families have no context of anything else; it’s everyday life to them.
Since the demonic realm aims to plant traumatic seeds as soon as possible, it’s no wonder that innocent children are the primary target. Protect your children!
Please pay attention to their physical, spiritual, and mental needs. It will affect their entire lives and who they become.
Viewing Explicit Material at a Young Age
The enemy hates innocent and pure. As I mentioned above, he wants children to be corrupted as soon as possible.
One of the methods he uses to do this is exposing them to explicit material at a young age. This can happen in various ways, such as:
- Finding magazines or videos that contain nudity or sexual acts.
- Hearing other kids talk about things they’ve seen that are perverse.
- Being molested or raped.
- Accidently seeing images depicting nudity while online.
These experiences can cause a child to become confused about their sexuality and what is considered “normal” behavior. It can also lead to them acting out sexually in their own lives when they get older.
If you were exposed to explicit material as a child, know that it’s not your fault and that you can be healed from its effects. Jesus wants to set you free!
Occult Interests and Activities
Getting involved in the occult, no matter how big or small, gives demonic spirits access to your mind. God hates the occult; it’s idolatry to Him.
“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nation’s there.
“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium, or spiritist, or who consults the dead.
Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices, the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.” Deuteronomy 18:9-12.
Occult activities include things such as:
- Video or board games where you “become” a character who participates in any of the things that God calls witchcraft or occultic and their related practices.
- Yoga (kundalini demon).
- Horoscopes.
- Ouija Boards.
- Crystals.
- Dreamcatchers.
- Tarot Cards.
Symptoms and Characteristics of the Spirit of Perversion
You may be wondering, how can I tell if I or someone I know is under the influence of the spirit of perversion? Let’s look at the character traits that they may exhibit next.
Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list, but it gives you a good idea of some characteristics of the spirit of perversion. If you see these things manifesting in your life, taking action is vital.
Spirit of Perversion: Truth Twister
The main characteristic of the spirit of perversion is that it twists the truth. This spirit loves to take what is good and twist it into something evil. It takes what is pure and makes it impure.
For example, this spirit might convince a person that:
- It’s okay to have premarital sex because “everyone’s doing it.”
- Looking at pornography isn’t a big deal because “it doesn’t hurt anyone.”
- It’s loving to accept a person’s homosexual lifestyle. (Actually, it’s the opposite. If you’re being loving and genuinely caring about a person, you don’t want them to end up in hell for eternity.)
- It’s okay to have an abortion; I have the right – after all, it’s my body.
- So what if I cheat on my spouse? They don’t pay any attention to me anyway.
- It’s okay to look at explicit images/videos of young people; it’s not like it’s a real person.
What was once considered good is now regarded as evil, while what was previously termed wrong is now called right. The spirit of perversion distorts the truth to justify its own.
“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight!” Isaiah 5:20-21.
Forgetting Absolute Truth
The spirit of perversion will also try to convince you that there is no absolute truth. It will tell you that what is right for one person might not be right for another and that you should disregard Godly principles. This is a lie!
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts.” Proverbs 21:2.
This spirit leads people to do whatever they want, without regard for the consequences.
Self-Centeredness Leading to Destroyed Relationships
The spirit of perversion will also cause a person to become more and more self-centered. They will begin to think only about themselves and their needs and wants. This can lead to all sorts of problems in relationships, such as:
- Spouses cheating on each other.
- Parents neglecting their children.
- Friends using and betraying each other.
A person under the influence of the spirit of perversion may also exhibit a quick temper or be easily irritated.
The spirit of perversion will also try to keep a person from having a close relationship with God. It will do everything it can to keep them from reading their Bible, attending church, or praying. This is because the spirit knows that the Bible will expose it and give a person strength and power over it.
Child Abuser
Child abuse is also common among those under the influence of the spirit of perversion. In fact, the spirit of perversion may have initially come into the abuser’s life through child abuse when they were a child. It can become a cycle of abuse, generation after generation.
Freedom and Deliverance from The Spirit Of Perversion
I hope this spiritual warfare article has opened your eyes to the characteristics of the spirit of perversion. If you or someone you know is struggling with the spirit of perversion, there is hope. God can free you from this unclean spirit and help you live a life free of its torment and guilt.
The path to freedom includes:
- Becoming born again.
- Casting these demonic spirits out of your life through deliverance.
- Renewing your mind.
- Walking through life with the help of the Holy Spirit.
What the Bible Says About Renewing Your Mind
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2.
What the Bible Says About Walking in the Spirit
“Walk in the spirit and you won’t fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16.
What the Bible Says About Deliverance from Demons
“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he (Jesus) said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:17-20.
Prayer for Help with the Spirit of Perversion
Thank You, Jesus, for Your perfect love. Thank You that You see me as whole and complete, no matter what my past may hold. I ask for Your help in overcoming any stronghold of perversion in my life. Please help me to be pure in thought, word, and deed. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen!

The Armor of God (Ephesian 6:10-18)
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”
That might mean staying away from certain situations or not entertaining “seed thoughts” that he tries planting in your mind. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2) and “take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
